The subject of genetic counseling and testing specific to breast cancer was hidden years ago (I know my doctor never mentioned it: even with my extensive family history of breast cancer, and the increasing need for repeat mammograms when routine ones showed "something." I found out about genetic counseling/testing through an article in PEOPLE Magazine, began my own investigation from there (totally alone-I was married to my now ex-husband who made it clear from the start he would NOT help me with any of this..1 reason I divorced him among many others.) There was no literature about "previvors" - women who took action to prevent inevitable breast cancer from starting. The American Cancer Society did NOT consider me a breast cancer survivor since they said I had never had breast cancer..a prophylactic double mastectomy didn't matter to them. This book shows that it DOES matter, and how genetic testing can stop cancer before it has a chance to start. I urge anyone reading this review to be proactive regarding their own lives the lives of their loved ones, and buy this excellent book.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.A much needed book!By Lori AdelsonThis book was written by three women whose combined knowledge of the topic is perhaps unsurpassed. I have had the honor of meeting Sue Friedman, DVM, who founded FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered.) She is truly an encyclopedia of knowledge on the topic. She has teamed with Rebecca Stuphen MD, a clinical geneticist and esteemed researcher on genetic cancer and Kathy Steligo, a health writer who authored The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook. All three women are breast cancer survivors. When I faced my own knowledge of being a BRCA2 mutation carrier, FORCE did not exist, nor were there any reference books. I am thrilled to now be able to have this book for my own reference and to share with others who need guidance, including health care providers. It is well organized and has anecdotes that help make each topic more real and personal. There are helpful tips and diagrams. Further references, especially online links, at the end of each chapter are quite helpful. It also has expert views in each section and detailed publication references for each chapter. I plan to share it with my medical providers and hope that they not only read it but place it in their library to share with patients! I am thankful to the authors for compiling this treasure of information. I have cousins who are also dealing with this kind of information.
