The writing wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. The character of Ester was not all that strong, believable or interesting. She was mostly concerned about the King's feelings for her and for the most part didn't want to make waves or interfere. While she did save her people in this story, she was not written in a manner that did justice to the intelligent and strong woman who I think the actual Esther probably was. I wasn't impressed with how Esther purposely tried to keep the king from choosing her. I think the real Esther tried to get chosen and wanted to get chosen so she could help her people. This Esther was more like. "My uncle says I should do this to help the Jewish people, but there is a Jewish boy in my village who I like. I won't tell my uncle no, so instead I will try to keep the king from picking me and just go through the motions. Oh, the king picked me! He is so dreamy. I hope he doesn't stop loving when he finds out I am a Jew. Before reading this book, I read the biblical version to be sure I had an understanding of Esther' s role nit only in the Old Testament but also in Jewish history. Imagine my surprise when the book paid Esther with someone other than the Old Testament King Xeres!! The author explains this difference in her comment AFTER the end of the book. While the book is a fictional account of the biblical story, I saw no purpose in "creating" a fictional brother for Esther to marry. The story would have been just as good using the factual King Ceres.19 of 20 people found the following review helpful.Not bibilically correct.By IrisThe book is good in some parts.Its weakest point is that it is not biblically correct.For instance, Mordecai is Esther's cousin rather than her "uncle."Esther's original name in Bible is Hadassah, a Jew name, she was not called Esther(a Babylion name) until she entered palace, so it is rather impossible for anyone to call her Esther before the event.In Bible, Esther fasted for three days instead of one(which was plotted in this book).The book failed to demonstrate the law in Persia of anyone not being summoned by the king will be put to death, only if the king spares the person, and it failed to record Esther's words "if I perish, I perish," and these two weak points made Esther's courage to confront the king less significant.See all 197 customer reviews...
