I've read many more books on gun rights since that time. Many of them didn't exist until after this book, because the prolifiration of pro-gun books was just starting after years of false and negative attacks against the 2nd Amendment. Stephen Halbrook is among the best writers on the topic. This book covers an area of extreme importance. It helps you understand the ability to defend yourself and the ability to fight to keep or regain what is taken from you (as an individual or as a society) are critical characteristics of true temporal freedom. The characteristics of freedom are always debated, but historical experience clearly shows armed citizens always have the most freedom compared to other cultures. This book is full of factual quotes that are NOT taken out of context. His research was exceptionally meticulous. You will actually miss out on some key points if you don't check out the end notes. Once you review the end notes you will realize how much research he really did. Make your own decision about the quality versus the unjust negative reviews. My wallet makes my most important statement about the book. I've bought more than 24 copies to distribute to friends and associates over the years. I have not done anything close to this with any other book, except for distributing about 100 copies of a booklet with the US Constitution in it.I've periodically scanned negative reviews and found them to be guilty of omission (of facts and truth) or full of anti-gun bias. Some people willfully ignore Truth, because it is contrary to their ideals and agendas. For me it is similar to hearing and reading movie reviews. I know it must be worth looking at if liberal/progressive sources attack it. Some of the reviews here on .com are clearly by hard core anti-gunners. Watch out for that. Some people compare this book negatively to other pro-gun writers. I really don't understand this behavior. Most of these writers all emphasize different areas or approach gun rights from different angles. They compliment each other and should not be put in conflict with each other. Mr. Halbrook has an excellent writing style and does excellent research. It's OK to like other books more than this one, but there is no objectively just reason to talk bad about this book.I highly recommend this book. You will absolutely not waste your time reading it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Legal and moral apologia for the natural right of defenseBy Richard B. WillsonFactual unemotional rationale for the God given natural right (whether civil government exists or not)and corresponding responsibility to defend one's right to life and safety, and by extension, the rights of family, home, community, and country. Acknowledges the civilian militia (every able bodied man from 16 to 60) who may be called from home, providing his personally owned small arms (I bought my rifle at age 13, and still have it) to meet any challenge to his community. During WWII our local Co. L 41st Division Oregon National Guard, a U.S. Army reserve, was activated and serving in Europe and South Pacific. I, private #10509, at 16 and a high school junior, was enlisted into the Oregon State Guard, activated by the Governor Don't tell me we didn't exist. With modern city problems and terrorism, their usefulness in an emergency is, as always, still valid.4 of 5 people found the following review helpful.Provides Voluminous Evidence that Gun Rights are Individual RightsBy What's the frequency, KennethThis book provides information, from early western history through the late 20th century, about the individual right to keep and bear arms in self defense and in defense of the community. Halbrook destroys the myth, propagated by gun grabbers, that the 2nd Amendment is the right to a state militia, or any other government organization. He exposes the fact that throughout history, the politically adept have noted that keeping arms in the hands of individuals supports a free state, and that this fact is exactly why the founding fathers intended to protect the rights of individuals to keep and bear arms, not only to protect their persons and property, and their communities, but even to hunt! (Game laws in England had been created specifically to keep peasants from hunting, so that it could be completely enjoyed by the wealthy landed--but even the creators of the game laws respected the rights of all to self-defense, and the practicality with which a free and well-armed people could defend their community.)Reading this informative book will arm you with the information you need to refute the absurd claims of gun grabbers that the notion of the individual right to keep and bear arms is somehow new, or alternatively, outdated, or that the supreme court has ever settled this matter in their favor--in fact it demonstrates that the 2nd Amendment affirmed a centuries-old right that had already existed, and had continued to exist, well into the 20th century. After reading the thorough treatment of the topic this book provides, one becomes certain that the ancient right remains instrumental in protecting American liberty, and that it is no accident that where liberty is most trampled is also where the right is most trampled. What's more, one becomes certain that the United States is at a point in history where we will either once again demand the uninfringed right, or will descend into tyranny.See all 39 customer reviews...
