And again, she brings to life a complex woman, Mary Rowlandson, who was captured by Native Americans in 1676 in King Phillip's War. Belding Brown introduces us to Rowlandson in the opening pages: her compassion for others, including those looked down upon by members of her husband's Puritan congregation, her outward submission to his will, and the work involved in simply feeding and clothing her family.After her capture, she is at first shocked by the cultural differences of her captors. As time goes on, however, Rowlandson realizes she has more freedom as a slave of the tribe than she did before her capture. She is touched by the open affection and kindness tribal members have for children, in contrast to the Puritan strict discipline that included whipping children. Make no mistake. Life is hard as the tribe moves to escape British soldiers. They are often hungry and cold. But the burdens are shared equally.After almost four months, she is returned to her husband who has raised money for her ransom. She is asked to write about her captivity. Belding Brown imagines Rowlandson's adjustment, not just to her stern husband, but to a woman's subservience in general. And now Rowlandson can clearly see the hyprocrisy of her society and especially those who profess Christian values but show little or no kindness, only judgement. Even her account of her captivity is skewed by the man who edits it.Belding Brown paints a compelling picture of 17th century life in colonial America. We are there during Rowlandson's dramatic captivity, and we are there as she reconciles conflicting values and experience. We hear Rowlandson's complex voice and strong spirit. YoungbloodI gave this one 3 stars because, although I am sure it is historically correct, I wish I had read other reviews about the violence and gore. I just couldn't take it. I know that sounds horrible of me, as I am sure this is exactly how it happened. I should've thought through buying a historical novel of this type. That being said, it is nothing against the author or the story. I just can't take all the gore and violence. Although it isn't for me, it would be wonderful for someone who can take the violent realities of the time period. Just not for the squeamish or faint of heart....2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Started Out Great, But Then Went South Pretty QuicklyBy Kate LondonThe good news about this book is that it illuminates a rarely explored part of American history for current women's fiction--The Native American wars for land and supremacy in Puritan New England about a hundred years before the American Revolution. It also shines a light on the treacherous dealings of the so called Christians towards the Native Americans, and how they horribly abused their power in the name of God. The writing is really good, and the protagonist Mary is strong, and based on a real life woman who was captured into slavery, but then released a few months later back to the English/British settlers (Not to "Americans" since the war for independence wouldn't happen for another century.). She wrote the first bestselling book based on her experiences with the Native Americans.But I only gave this book three stars because while it had a great premise and potential, I feel like the story became quickly clogged down with the author's bias against the Puritans. Granted they did some terrible things in the name of religion, but this book just went on and on and on! It really started to undercut it's own --quite valid--case. To me the story really lost a lot of it's power to voice the Native American cause because it degenerated into cliche-ville. Where was the complexity and nuance about human nature for ALL the characters in this drama, and not just the protagonist In the author's note at the end it says the information was very sketchy as to the known facts.so there's no proof that they were all so rigid and unfeeling. I feel like she could have really fleshed out all the characters more to make them truly unforgettable.It's too bad that almost all of the Puritans in this (except Mary) were cartoonish-ly portrayed as weak, gullible, backbiting and evil in the name of God. Especially her buffoonish husband! It really just got to be ridiculous, and I almost didn't finish the book because I felt like I was being hit over the head with propaganda that didn't feel real. I mean, does the author really think that Mary was practically the ONLY Puritan who could think for herself, show basic human kindness and understand that slavery was wrong (After all the entire New England colony fought a brutal Civil War about a 175 years later to end it for good-- so it only makes sense that a lot of other people knew the wrongness of it a lot earlier.)Also the book went on about forty pages too long after she was ransomed back to the English. It was kind of a drag to the finish line. With this kind of story, I should have been balling at the end, but instead I was like, "Meh.". . . Kleenex box untouched.See all 509 customer reviews...
